"The Second Symposium on Research Results of Lunar Samples"
Held in Shanghai
The conference was hosted by the Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center and hosted by Donghua University. More than 200 experts and scholars from relevant domestic scientific research institutions, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, relevant universities, the Aerospace Science and Technology Group, and international scientific research institutions, such as the University of Cologne in Germany, the University of Osaka in Japan, and the Open University in the United Kingdom, attended the conference, of which 20 experts made reports.
The meeting focused on the latest achievements of Chang'e-5 and Chang'e-6 lunar sample research projects. The National Space Administration announced the establishment of the second expert committee on lunar samples, and Bian Zhigang, the deputy director of the National Space Administration, issued an appointment letter to the expert committee. Zhu Rixiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a work report on behalf of the first expert committee on lunar samples.
Since the "First Symposium on Research Results of Lunar Samples" was held in January 2023, the research on Chang'e-5 lunar samples has continued to advance, and new achievements and discoveries have continued to emerge. Up to now, more than 100 papers and patents have been produced, and a large number of excellent research teams have been cultivated. On June 25, 2024, after Chang'e-6 returned with lunar back samples, the National Space Administration stepped up the organization of lunar sample research. In the short term, a series of major achievements were published in high-level academic journals, injecting fresh vitality into international lunar sample research, and further expanding human understanding of the formation and evolution of the moon.
At the seminar, experts conducted in-depth discussions on many achievements, such as Chang'e 6 sample recording the SPA impact on the back of the moon, isotope chronology research updating the history of volcanic activity, paleomagnetic analysis reshaping the deep thermal evolution of the moon, Chang'e sample comparative research supporting the dichotomy of the moon, and new progress in research on the composition and application of lunar soil materials.
Cheng Yanhua, a researcher from Donghua University, delivered an academic report on behalf of the team entitled "Continuous preparation and application of lunar soil fiber for in-situ manufacturing on the lunar surface". The report mentioned that the team of Zhu Meifang, director of the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Fiber Materials of Donghua University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, independently developed and built a 1.0 - simulated lunar microgravity environment modular fiber forming equipment, and successfully prepared Chang'e-5 (CE5C1000) lunar soil fiber with a diameter of 10-50 µ m. At the same time, the various performance parameters of the lunar soil fiber as the reinforcement of lunar soil based concrete were comprehensively characterized, including its tensile breaking strength (~1GPa), the hardness and elastic modulus of the fiber in the nanoscale. It is understood that the Chang'e 5 lunar soil fiber will be displayed to the public in the National Museum with the exhibition of "Nine Days of the Moon - 20 Years of China's Lunar Exploration Project".
Zhu Meifang told reporters that the team is still working hard, and a new generation of lunar soil fiber forming equipment is also being independently developed and built, which is expected to achieve automated and continuous preparation of lunar soil fiber in vacuum and vacuum+microgravity environments. In the future, the team plans to systematically promote the engineering application research of lunar soil fiber, and on this basis, it can provide innovative material technology support of high reliability, lightweight and environmental adaptability for the construction of China's lunar research station.
Chairman of the Second Expert Committee on Lunar Samples Xu Yigang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that "the Chang'e 6 sample has opened up a new path for the three major scientific issues of lunar material composition, evolution history and resource utilization. The systematic comparative study with the Chang'e 5 sample has made China move from" sampling return "to" systematic research ", laying a scientific foundation for manned lunar landing and deep space exploration." With the in-depth analysis of Chang'e-6 achievements and the promotion of follow-up tasks, China's lunar scientific research will contribute Chinese wisdom to human exploration of the Earth Moon system.
